BeautyTies interview with artist : Nicole Sheppard

Artist Nicole Sheppard is an art graduate from Manchester University. Nicole was chosen to showcase her work for the Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2022 show.

What made Art the chosen subject for you at Uni?

I’ve always preferred learning in a hands-on approach through making, sculpting, bending objects together, so art seemed like the only choice for me.

What inspires your artwork?

My work explores the relationship between human, non-human and non-material   matter and its relationship with our everyday life. I am inspired by theories of New-Materialism and Post-Humanism.

What is your favourite piece and what is the story behind it?

I don’t have one stand out favourite. But the work I am most proud of would be Intra-action:I and Intra-action:II due to their material composition and the skills I acquired to make them. Formed from Hemp-crete a biocomposite alternative to concrete, made using hemp waste product and lime binder. With a setting time of three months the creation of these pieces took a lot of patience and new learning!

Do you have any future goals regarding your art?

I am saving to rent my own studio space and would like to continue my studies with a   masters degree in a few years.

Who is your favourite artist?

Ernesto Neto or Phyllida Barlow

If you could change anything in the world, what would it be?

I have no idea, it seems like everything needs to change!

How do You relax?

I'm awful at relaxing…but I suppose walking my dog Darcy

What music are you currently listening to?

Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell and Paolo Nutini

What is your favourite medium to use for your art?

Anything naturally sourced, I love making my own dyes from plants.

Congratulations on being chosen for Bloomberg New Contemporaries Exhibition. What are you planning to do now you have finished University?

Thank you. Currently I'm working as a florist in Jersey and travelling for exhibitions in the U.K. I  hope to move to London in the next few years and continue my artistic practice.

Who inspires you?

My family and friends.

Can you recommend any art galleries that we can visit?

The Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh is great.
